Cambridge Silicon Radio

Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) was indeed established in Cambridge, UK, in 1998, initially focusing its technology development within the audio field. The company made significant strides in expanding its technology portfolio and market presence through a series of strategic acquisitions.

In January 2007, CSR acquired Nordnav Technologies and Cambridge Positioning Systems, signaling a commitment to software GPS systems. This move diversified CSR's portfolio and marked its entry into the GPS technology market.

Further expansion took place in 2009 when CSR successfully acquired SiRF Technology Holdings for $136 million. This acquisition brought with it a wealth of intellectual property, including technologies related to GPS and Assisted GPS (A-GPS), dead reckoning, and location center platforms. This move not only significantly enhanced CSR's technological capabilities but also propelled the company into the ranks of the world's top ten fabless semiconductor manufacturers.

In 2017, Qualcomm, a multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company, acquired CSR for $2.4 billion. This acquisition was a strategic move for Qualcomm, aimed at expanding its business in burgeoning areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and connected vehicles. This was particularly important given the saturation of profits in the mobile phone business in recent years. The acquisition of CSR provided Qualcomm with a wealth of expertise and intellectual property, positioning the company to capitalize on new growth opportunities in these emerging markets.
